Paying Your Rent with Benefits
If you receive support to help pay your rent, this will usually be through Universal Credit. In some cases, you may still receive Housing Benefit from your local council.
Universal Credit (most common)
Universal Credit is the main benefit for help with housing costs and is paid by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
- It is paid monthly in arrears
- Your housing costs are included as part of your total payment
- Payments may change depending on your income and circumstances
- You are responsible for paying your rent to us
In some situations, payments can be made directly to the landlord (for example, if you are struggling with payments or fall into arrears).

Housing Benefit (limited cases)
Housing Benefit is now generally only available if you:
- Are of pension age, or
- Live in supported or temporary accommodation, or
- Are already receiving Housing Benefit and your circumstances have not changed
Housing Benefit is paid by your local council, usually every 2 or 4 weeks.

- You must ensure your rent is paid in full and on time
- You are responsible for paying any shortfall between your benefit and your rent
- You must inform both us and the relevant authority of any changes to your circumstances
- Keep track of your payments and respond promptly to any requests for information
